Marsha Mackinnon

Ever since I can remember I have been a communicator and an interpreter. Early in my professional career I was responsible for interpreting technical specifications into laymen’s language. This led to a career in corporate and technical communications, writing manuals and newsletters. The majority of my career was in information technology and again, it was my responsibility to bridge the gap between technology and the layman. I often wanted to pursue the arts but just never had the time while I was working full-time. Now retired, I have the luxury of pursuing the visual arts and trying my hand at communicating through painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

I am very fond of Paul Ygartua’s work, both his portraiture as well as his abstracts. He is a prolific artist who uses bright colours and he paints with a vigorous energy. I also admire Monet’s works. The Impressionist style is something I admire. Again, beautiful colours, peaceful scenes and nature are all consistent themes.

I am inspired by nature and gravitate to natural scenes with positive energy. I am an avid photographer and will often look to my photographs for inspiration. I find children interesting subjects. Their world is simple and focused and I like to capture images that reflect their experiences and curiosity.

I work primarily in acrylics on either canvas or wood and generally work with 16” x 20” up to 48” x 48” substrates. I like to create a composition that will catch the viewer’s interest right away and then use artistic techniques to move the viewer’s eye around the piece. There’s a positive energy to my work – I tend to employ uplifting images and colours with an overriding objective to leave the viewer with a sense enjoyment and satisfaction.
