Gary Brettnacher

Gary spent his working career as a professional freelance photographer specializing in sports action. Self taught and starting out shooting skiing things grew to include most outdoor high action sports such as mountain biking, sailboarding, kayaking, etc. His work has been published nationally and internationally in major publications and he has held commercial accounts with large outdoor manufacturers Including Patagonia, The North face, Sierra Designs, Rossignol, and Atomic.

Coming from a film background, Gary attempted to make the transition to digital when it became the dominant force in the photographic world. "I found that digital photography did not interest me. It took the mystery and magic out of the art form. I struggled with the realization that the majority of the creative side of digital is accomplished by the use of a few computer programs. Having hands on experience with b/w film of the entire process is important to me. Shooting and creating the image requires the sensitivity to the films grain structure the shutter speed and lens aperture. Personally processing the film and making silver gelatin prints in the darkroom allows for creative control. Painting the image adds a personal touch and I apply oil paints to varying degrees depending on the image. I love art in all of its various mediums, and my goal with my work is to create images that are unique with an edge that will interest the viewer and get them to create their own interpretation of the artwork.
